Harry Maguire has been criticised for giving away a penalty against Germany

Harry Maguire made his latest error in giving away a penalty in England’s game against Germany this evening

At 0-0 and after a positive first half, the defender was caught trying to play out of defence and was dispossessed by Jamal Musiala before bringing down his opponent for a penalty, which Ilkay Gundogan slotted home.

Maguire has received more criticism on social media for the period of play, with one fan branding him ‘insanely bad’.

‘However, it’s not his fault he’s picked. He’s basically being thrown into the lions den every week, he’s playing at a level he’s just not able for of what’s expected in today’s football.

Other users criticised the regularity of Maguire’s mistakes, many of which saw him recently lose his place at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag.

‘There goes Maguire again… Doing what he always does best…playing crap!!’ said one user.

‘Maguire does it time and time again,’ added another.

‘At this point, it’s almost as if you have to feel sorry for Maguire. Nobody will, but still!’ added a third.

Gareth Southgate has seemingly made it clear that Maguire will be a starter for England at the Qatar World Cup, with the 29-year-old starting back-to back games this international break.
