Manchester United player ratings vs Man City: Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho poor

Manchester United player ratings vs Man City:

David de Gea

Made the odd save and could do little about any of the goals as he was badly let down by United’s poor defensive organisation. 3

Diogo Dalot

Booked in the second minute and never really recovered against the tricky Jack Grealish and City punished United from crosses. 2

Raphael Varane

The dam burst after Varane succumbed to an October injury. Off the pitch when Erling Haaland made it 2-0, the Norwegian eluded him to make it 3-0. Came off injured. 3

Lisandro Martinez

City dominated United from crosses but Martinez was not obviously culpable and more a victim of the naive approach of his manager. 4

Tyrell Malacia

Was alarmingly distant from Phil Foden off the ball and never got close to him on it. A chastening derby debut where he did little right. Substituted at the pause. 1

Scott McTominay

Blocked heroically to briefly keep the game at 0-0 but was easy pickings for the best midfield in the league. A reminder he is a stop-gap, not a specialist, in defensive midfield. 3

Christian Eriksen

Failed to track Foden for the opening goal and was inexplicably tasked with handling the monstrous Haaland at the game-killing corner. Poorest performance since Brentford. 3

Antony

A luxury in the first-half but rallied and scored brilliantly to make it 4-1 with more than half-an-hour to play. Then City responded. 5

Bruno Fernandes

Ineffective with and without the ball. City were not remotely startled by any of United’s pressing and Fernandes regressed against the world-class Kevin de Bruyne. 2

Jadon Sancho

Carelessly lost the ball and United were soon losing. Did little to protect Malacia and did not do much more to test Kyle Walker or Joao Cancelo. 2

Marcus Rashford

Even against City’s two back-up centre-backs, he provided no presence through the middle and made way for Anthony Martial shortly before the hour. 2

Subs

Victor Lindelof

Was never going to halt Haaland. 3

Luke Shaw

Played Foden onside for his hat-trick goal. 3

Casemiro

Had no impact. 3

Fred

His shot was parried by Ederson and converted by Anthony Martial. 5

Anthony Martial

Scored his first goal for United in a year and then converted a penalty. 7

Manager

The line-up was set in stone and that was part of the problem. Ten Hag refused to integrate Casemiro into the team and United were as porous as a sieve. 3
